Currently up to 74% of the used tires end up in uncontrolled areas or in waste disposal sites creating a series of problems. The aim of the Presidential Decree No. 116 (Government Gazette A '81/5.3.2004) related to used tire processing is to develop ways for utilization of at least 65% of the total quantity of the 50,000 tons of used tires that is estimated that are utilized each year in our country, of which 10% must be recycled.

Why bother?

When disposed of in landfill sites, tyres in large volumes can cause instability by rising to the surface of the site, affecting its long term settlement and therefore posing problems for future use and land reclamation. Rubber materials contain proportions of organic chemicals and little is known about the long-term leaching effects of these materials.
